Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
“Ocean Block”
Our Marinus Vineyard is divided into a number of small blocks planted to the five red Bordeaux varietals according to soil type and exposure. Each block is picked individually following strict ripeness parameters and fermented separately. In some years, certain of these small lots may shine above the rest, exhibiting unique characters of this special terroir.
Because of the superb quality of the 2004 vintage, we decided to select the very best Cabernet Sauvignon lot for a special single-block bottling. Ocean Block sits on the western edge of the Marinus Vineyard on a west-facing slope. It is often among the very best of our Cabernet lots and in 2004, it was spectacular. After extensive tastings at the winery, we selected a few barrels, creating a blend of impeccable balance and character.
In the glass this wine exhibits a very deep shade of crimson and is perfectly opaque. The vibrant aromas express beautifully-ripened red fruits with notes of coffee and dried spices. On the palate the flavors are intense and very long. We find red and black cherry along with ripe plum, accented with spicy cedar notes. The silky texture is full bodied, with solid ripe tannins and very well structured for long-term ageing.
Vinification notes:
Hand-picked into small bins on October 18th, 2004.
100% de-stemmed. Pumped over twice daily during fermentation.
Aged in small French oak barrels (50% new) for 18 months.
Bottled in June, 2006
Case Production: 281 (6-packs cases)
