9/3/2003 -- We have wild plums with 1/2" pits in the center. They are very hard to pit. Can they be run through the fruit press without pitting them or must they be pitted?

Response From The Home Brew Store Dot Com: Yes, soft fruits can be run through a fruit press without pitting. With the larger pits (plums, peaches, apricots, etc.) there is some loss of efficiency on juice extraction due to the press "bottoming out" against the pits themselves. This can be overcome by placing the fruits in a course nylon straining bag before placing them in the press. After pressing them out, the pits should be easy to remove from the bottom of the bag and the remainder of the pulp can be pressed out afterwards.
