
2006 J. LOHR ESTATES South Ridge Syrah, Paso Robles
VINTAGE
The 2006 vintage saw a return to below-average rainfall for Paso Robles, and with it came smaller vine canopies, smaller clusters and smaller berries. But unlike the previous three growing seasons, once veraison started we had very mild weather conditions straight through to harvest, allowing color, flavor and fragrance ripeness to come together, simultaneously producing Syrah full of bold and generous varietal and regional expression. The 2006 vintage is comprised of Australian clones 1, 4 and 6, which brought a dark complexion of blackberry, boysenberry and plum jam flavors, with French Chapoutier clone 470 and 877 adding bright red fruits and violets. We now have three vineyards contributing to South Ridge, including our original planting in block 60 of Australian clones, block 15 which has become the backbone of the blend with both Australian and French clones, and a new addition from our block 13 Creston property which is a mix of French and Australian clones. The result is a plump, dark, abundantly fruity and spicy Syrah that is most likely our best effort to date!
VINEYARD
The 2006 J. Lohr Estates Syrah is grown on a combination of soils – predominantly sandy and gravelly to reign in Syrah’s rangy growth potential. The name South Ridge is derived from the orientation of the namesake vineyard, which sits on a south-facing hillside, resulting in fruit with intense flavors. As the popularity of Syrah has grown, we have planted two additional vineyards which include both Australian and French clones – one, block 15, is within a mile of the original planting, and the second is eight miles south in a slightly cooler area of the Paso Robles AVA.

WINEMAKER’S COMMENTS
The 2006 J. Lohr Estates South Ridge Syrah has a dense, dark red color with youthful red-purple hues. Blackberry, boysenberry, strawberry and plum jam fruit with hints of white pepper, licorice and black olive spice dominate the aroma. A good weight of dark red fruits is balanced by white pepper spiciness, dried fig and orange peel on the palate with a very plump and juicy mouthfeel. This wine can be enjoyed now with hearty braised meats or a savory tri-tip with an Ancho chile glaze.
