2005 Lorenzo Chardonnay -- Tandem Winery Shopping Cart
$38.00
The first time Greg La Follette got a chance to work with the Lorenzo Vineyard Chardonnay was with wine from the 1993 vintage. The forward, lime and pineapple statements of John Bazzano’s fruit left a lasing impression upon Greg. A dozen years and a few producers later, vineyard and winemaker are reunited with the same flavor profile and expectations for profound terroir expression. We truly appreciate John’s striking up this relationship again, and look forward to mining the vintage variations that only old-vine Chardonnay such as Lorenzo Vineyard can bring to the bottle.
Tasting notes:
Talk about picking up where you left off! Familiar notes of Rose’s Lime Juice, subtle ginger flower and a hint of fresh-cut white pineapple (not yellow, overripe or tinned) mark the shy initial expression. Additional air time yields more expressive spice and Meyer Lemon. On the palate, the flavors are all about crisp acid fruit, citrus and white pineapple, also giving way to more spice and generosity with time in the glass. These attributes indicate that this white wine will be particularly long-lived, giving great reward to the patient collector and student of wine with a little cellaring.
Technical Data:
- Vineyard: Located in the heart of the Russian River, John Bazzano’s vineyard is among the oldest of Chardonnay plantings in our region. Our section of the vineyard was re-trellised to a quadrilateral system, spreading out the bud load and creating small, open clusters with tiny berries.
- Harvest: The grapes were among the very last Chardonnay picked in 2005 in the Russian River Valley. Brought in during the first week of November, we first weren’t sure whether this vineyard lot would make it. But make it the grapes did, coming in at perfect ripeness, with the long, late hang-time truly expressing the cool vintage and wet spring and early summer. Befitting of the tight clusters due to more water during the growing season, our whole-cluster pressing generated a higher solids content, allowing us to cold-settle the juice before going to barrel, dropping out some tartaric acid before the fermentation commenced.
- Fermentation: A native wild fermentation took hold early and easily, finishing primary fermentation within 3 weeks. Secondary fermentation took a lot longer – with the high acidity, ML did not complete until late May of 2006, but did finish without inoculation.
- Barrel aging: 9 months on the lees with monthly stirring in 1/3 new French oak helped to soften the cool season attributes. Primary cooperage was Tonnellerie de Jarnac.
- Final bottling technical information of 135 cases bottled unfined and unfiltered:
- pH: 3.24
- TA: 7.15 g/L
- 14.05% alcohol
- Residual sugar: 0.09% (xeric desert-dry)
