Vineyard Information
Our Estate Edna Ranch Vineyard is ideally situated in close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, with its cooling breezes and frequent evening fog. This moderating effect provides a long growing season, allowing complex flavor to develop in the fruit, while protecting it from over-ripening. The 2004 vintage finished in a flurry of activity, as several weeks of unusually hot weather brought our Chardonnay vineyards to perfect ripeness, all within a few days of one another. This bottling is selected from several blocks of the vineyard and utilizes the Dijon clones 76 and 96 of Chardonnay, as well as a California selection known as “Tepesquet”. The result is a nuanced, complex wine that shows of the style and character of our Edna Ranch Estate.
Winemaking & Cellar Information
Fruit was harvested in the cool mornings and whole cluster pressed prior to cold-settling for 24 hours. Barrel lots were racked into 229 liter French oak barrels for fermentation, and we retained approximately 30% of the juice for fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. As fermentation completed, the barrels were stirred twice weekly, building rich texture into the wine, and encouraging subtle flavor and aromatic development. Malolactic fermentation was conducted on a lot-by-lot basis, softening acidity and bringing nuance to the aromatics. Final selection occurred in late July, with assemblage shortly after, allowing several months of integration prior to bottling in December.
