Introduction
The text as pretext was a sad experience for one of your editors prior to Vatican Council II. Each Passion Week was a time of concern for the Jewish community. Downtown streets were covered with leaflets of New Testament texts, describing the Jews ad adversaries and killers of Jesus. The Catholic-right group behind this contemptuous theological action insisted that what Jews did to Jesus in the First Century, they were doing in a similar manner in our time. A quotation taken out of context and without academic reference was used as an ideological pretext to disseminate hatred and anti-Semitism. That ended in 1965, after Vatican Council II's Nostra Aetate Declaration (No. 4) on Jews and Judaism......
