Attitudes in 11 Countries on Jews and the Middle East
In 2002, the Anti-Defamation League conducted the first of several surveys on European attitudes towards Jews. What we uncovered at that time were alarmingly high levels of anti-Semitism across many of Europe’s most developed nations. In 2007, ADL returned to Europe – this time, polling citizens from 11 different countries on their views on both Jews and the Middle East. Rather than finding an improved climate for Jewish relations, ADL discovered an alarming increase in anti-Semitic attitudes throughout much of the continent. ADL’s polling on perceptions of the Middle East was equally eye opening. While the European public displays an evident fear of Iran’s nuclear program and views Hamas as a terrorist organization, antipathy toward Israel remains. Public sympathy still lies with the Palestinians, and most Europeans fail to view Israel’s 2006 response to Hezbollah terrorism as justified.
