Drawing on his experience with Cabernet Sauvignon clones and his intimate knowledge of sub-appellations within the region, Anthony has created a wine that builds upon the unique terroir of Napa Valley. Our 2002 vintage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (97%), Petit verdot (2%) and Merlot (1%), from vineyards in Rutherford, Oakville, Yountville, and the Sierra Foothills. For the 2002 vintage, Cabernet Sauvignon clones 4, 6, 7 and 337, primarily from vineyards in Carneros and Rutherford, were blended and softened with Merlot and Petite verdot from vineyards in Yountville. The wine was aged in a combination of French (78%) and American (22%) oak barrels, of which 58% were new barrels, for 21 months. The wine was not fined and received one rough filtration prior to bottling. Vintage Notes The 2002 vintage was extremely compressed, and followed a long, cool growing season. A cool Spring saw some frosts in April and this was followed by light rains in May. Following veraison in July, growing conditions were truly ideal with warm days and cool, even cold nights. A few manageable heat spikes in late September and early October brought the fruit to full maturity. A brief heat wave during harvest had growers scrambling but temperatures dropped to season normals and the remaining grapes matured slowly and evenly. Tasting Notes Our Cabernet sauvignon, deep ruby in color, has rich, ripe cherry, cassis and blackberry fruit aromas. Soft tannins and sweet oak combine with a gentle hint of pepper and spice to yield a full-bodied wine with excellent balance and a long, lingering finish that will continue to develop with additional bottle age. The wine’s exquisite balance continues the sophisticated, elegant, Bordeaux style associated with Bell Cabernet sauvignon. Excellent today, the wine will also reward those with the patience to cellar it.
