TASTING NOTES:
Joe Benziger has produced a full bodied yet silky smooth Zinfandel with dark fruit flavors and slight spice. The 2005 has wonderful balance and complexity with a lengthy finish.
VINEYARD: Taylor Vineyard is one of the oldest Zinfandel vineyards in Sonoma. Their warm hillside site combines well-drained gravelly soils with over 100-year-old vines planted to the original Dry Creek Clone.
VINTAGE: This vintage started off with a cold, wet spring and periodic rains during the summer. We spent considerable time adjusting and readjusting canopies and mowing and re-mowing vineyard rows in order to fight fungus and mold. Moving into harvest, just one rain could have knocked us out cold, but then a miracle! 30 plus days of perfect Indian summer. We ended up getting the grapes just the way we wanted them. Unknown to us, the grapes continued to gain weight late in the year. The extra weight slowed and lengthened the ripening process and this combined with great weather brought our grapes to perfect ripeness. The last grapes were picked on November 11, the latest ever for us in Sonoma. The last press load was December 1st and by this time, we were sick of harvest. This was one of those very rare harvests where we got it both ways--exceptional quality and excellent yields.
VINIFICATION: The grapes were crushed into a closed top fermenter. Fermented on skins for 15 days allowing the wine's flavors and vitality to develop before being pressed for maximum flavor extraction and to harmonized the tight-grained tannins. 17 months in French oak barrels added roundness and complexity. Our 2005 Taylor Zinfandel was bottled in May 2007.
Alcohol 14.9%, total acidity .61, pH 3.68
