When English teacher Erin Gruwell discovered that her at-risk students had never heard of the Holocaust, she decided to teach a curriculum of acceptance using books such as <i>Zlata's Diary: A Child's Life in Sarajevo</i>. The students began to see the parallels between these books and their own lives and recorded their thoughts in journals. <i>The Freedom Writers Diary</i> is a collection of these journal entries.

This book can help reinforce <i>Second Step</i> topics, such as violence prevention, and complements the academic extension activities in the <i>Second Step</i> middle school program.
