When English teacher Erin Gruwell discovered that her at-risk students had never heard of the Holocaust, she decided to teach a curriculum of acceptance using books such as Zlata's Diary: A Child's Life in Sarajevo. The students began to see the parallels between these books and their own lives and recorded their thoughts in journals. The Freedom Writers Diary is a collection of these journal entries.
This book can help reinforce Second Step topics, such as violence prevention, and complements the academic extension activities in the Second Step middle school program.
