Producers: Greg Lake, Will Alexander, Peter Sinfield. For most rock bands, the prospect of a Christmas album would seem anomalous or ill advised, but for ELP a holiday EP makes perfect sense. So much of the group's music is based on the Anglican church's musical traditions, from the hymnal qualities of their compositions to a rendering of the hymn "Jerusalem" (not included here), and their approach is so full of baroque grandiosity, that a Yuletide offering seems entirely appropriate. Two of these tracks, the title cut and "Humbug," were originally released as solo singles by Greg Lake, but the second version of the former, recorded two years later, is a group effort. Similarly, the synthesizer-laden take on Prokofiev's "Troika" (whose theme was also incorporated into "Father Christmas") is drawn from a Keith Emerson solo album. Both the group's seldom-seen sense of humor and often-seen penchant for ravaging the classics are in evidence on the closing tune, a rock & roll/boogie woogie version of the Nutcracker theme, which hails from their early album PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION.
