Jacob Heringman has assembled here for the first time a selection of sixteenth-century lute settings of vocal music by the greatest composer of the renaissance. This recording sheds fascinating light on Josquin's music and the ways in which it was heard by composers of the sixteenth century. The settings, from all over Europe, are exquisite transformations of the vocal originals, always allowing Josquin's genius to shine through. The performances, magnificently recorded, are virtuosic and vivid, delicate and shapely, mature and passionate, atmospheric and compelling.
