-- A blend of South American, Indonesian & East African beans roasted just beyond a full city roast yet not nearly as dark as a French roast.
The Viennese got their first taste of coffee in 1683 when the Turkish army, beating a very hasty retreat from their failed siege of Vienna left 500 sacks of green coffee behind. Thinking it camel fodder for which they had no use, the Austrians began burning the sacks. When a certain Franz George Kolschitzky got a whiff, he recognized the aroma, quickly stopped the burning and soon opened the first cafe in Vienna.
Vienna roast is a nice stop on the way from a medium roast that highlights the beans character to a French roast that highlights the darker roasterly qualities.
The beans selected for our Vienna Roast are strong enough in body & character to accomodate some roasterly "smoke" flavor without sacrificing their own inherent charms. So, you'll experience fruity and winey notes enveloped in a substantial body with a well rounded chocolatey finish but there will also be a slightly smokey bitter-sweet edge brought out by leaving the beans in the roasting drum just a few extra seconds.
