Travel south of DFW with Food Roots on Saturday July 11 for a one-day tour to three of Eat Green DFW’s selling producers. JuHa Ranch, Oak Grove Farms and Garden Harvests are each family owned and operated. They are different in size and focus and their contrast shows us the diversity of small North Texas agriculture. Learn first hand about these farmers who are dedicated to bringing sustainably grown produce, meat and dairy products to our community using organic and natural methods.
Our first stop is JuHa Ranch near Barry. JuHa raises grass-fed beef, pastured pork, goats, lamb, chickens and eggs. The ranch is owned and operated by Harry Butaud, Judi Glasgow-Butaud and Harry’s son Heath Butaud. Heath will be our host. The goal at JuHa is to be a source for locally produced food while following ethical and sustainable practices and preserving and maintaining a wholesome agricultural life. They raise their animals without hormones or antibiotics and use controlled grazing to develop native grasslands and pastures, and to conserve and develop wildlife habitat. Their pastures are lush and both farm animals and wildlife are abundant. JuHa pastures all of their animals. Their pigs are raised in large mobile pens that are moved to fresh pasture grass every few days. Their chickens are truly free-range living in mobile hen houses in the middle of the pasture. Coyotes and other predators are common but the chickens and other animals are protected by trained guard dogs that live in the pastures with the animals. Harry Butaud is an award-winning long time dog breeder who has applied this old-world method of predator protection to North Texas. You do not want to miss this opportunity to visit the “peaceable kingdom” of JuHa Ranch and meet this progressive Texas farm family.
Next we head back north to the town of Ennis. Ennis was founded in 1871 by the Houston and Texas Central Railroad. The town attracted many families of Czech descent and the city celebrates its Czech heritage each year with the National Polka Festival. We missed the festival for this year but we will get a taste of Ennis at the Brown Street Café and Kolache Depot. The Kolache Depot, an established family owned Czech-style Ennis bakery recently purchased the Brown Street Café. We will stop for a light lunch and a Kolache.
After lunch we go to our next stop just outside of town. Oak Grove Farms is a small vegetable farm owned by Tommy and Kristi Copeland. The Copelands became interested in organic method farming while helping their son with a college project. They have been raising vegetables for several years now. The Copelands focus on finding the best varieties for their land along with unusual varieties in demand by restaurant chefs. Tommy quickly lists dozens of different types of tomatoes, greens and other vegetables that he is growing and experimenting with. Tommy is currently growing Mirai, an American variety of super sweet quick cooking corn. Mirai is not widely available because it must be hand harvested. Oak Grove Farms was once part of a large cotton farm. Tommy has researched the history of the property and believes his vegetables are on land previously used as the barnyard. The soil was naturally enhanced over the years but was never tilled preserving the natural soil biology and making it an ideal place for growing produce using organic methods. Along with the vegetables the Copelands have also begun breeding a special French breed of chickens. Oak Grove Farms is a Certified Naturally Grown farm. They follow an organic program on all of their produce and also use some traditional natural techniques such as the Three Sisters, the Native American method of growing corn, squash and beans together. Tommy has a network of neighbors and artisanal growers and producers. He will try to have some of their product on hand for our tour.
Our last stop is Garden Harvests just north of Waxahachie. Garden Harvests is a large roadside vegetable garden and farm stand, created by Fina Longoria-Johnson, dedicated to the concept of being a local and convenient provider to the community. Fina is a native Texan and an amazing woman who works tirelessly to raise a huge variety of superior vegetables on over two acres of land near Waxahachie. Fina is a former school teacher who now uses Garden Harvests as her lassroom to educate her customers about fresh healthy food. She sells all she grows from her farm stand at the garden. She follows organic methods in growing and harvesting, and the produce you buy is picked that day. If you want something that is not in the store Fina will go into the garden and pick it for you. At the farm stand she also sell free-range eggs, pastured meats, sauces, bread and cheese from other Texas natural food producers.
You will have an opportunity to buy pick of the season at all of our stops.
