My name is Nathan Melson and my wife's name is Ellen. We own Sloans Creek Heritage Meats, LLC (SCHMLLC) in Northeast Texas near Dodd City. Sloans Creek Heritage Meats, LLC is the direct-marketing meat company for our family farm, Sloans Creek Farm. At Sloans Creek Farm we don't use hormone implants or routine antibiotics. We are striving to be a non-certified organic, sustainable, grass-based family farm with a focus on quality, local, grass-only (Our term for grassfed.) beef, grass-only sheep, grass-only goat, and pastured, sustainable pork produced from heritage livestock breeds.
We raise registered Red Poll Cattle, Murray Grey Cattle, and Irish Dexter Cattle for Grass-Only Beef. We raise registered St. Croix Hair Sheep for Grass-Only Sheep (Lamb), Myotonic Meat Goats (Chevon) for Grass-Only Goat, and Pastured, Sustainably Produced Registered Red Wattle Hogs. Grass-Only means just that! Our cattle, hair sheep, and goats are raised on an all forage diet in a managed grass system, and they receive no grain in their diets. The hogs are raised on soil and pasture with grain as part of their diet. However, we strive to feed natural grains in our ration, and we Do Not Feed GMO Corn or Soy to our hogs. We believe this produces a superior product for human consumption, is better for the animals' health, and we believe it is how God intended farm animals to be raised. Healthy, Happy, and Humanely!
"All flesh is grass and the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field."-- Isaiah 40:6
We believe our animal and land husbandry practices are in line with your store's philosophy for its products. Even though we aren't certified organic we follow organic and sustainable practices in the management of our farm. We don't apply chemical-based conventional fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides to our farm and our animals don't receive chemical anthelmentics (dewormers), growth hormones, or routine antibiotics. Instead, we use multi-species rotational grazing to: keep pasture weeds under control; spread manure for fertility; manage many of our native prairie species; and to help control parasites in our livestock. We use composts, compost teas, molasses, fish fertilizer, and other organic approved soil and plant foods and treatments. For our livestock we also: provide sea kelp meal and unrefined trace mineral salt for vitamin and mineral supplementation; use Diatomacious Earth (DE), apple cider vinegar, and soaps to aid in parasite control; and rarely have to treat an animal with antibiotics due to minimal problems with ailments (When we do it is only as a treatment to help an animal recover from an illness or infection. This is the humane thing to do.). We believe the customer is the best certifier and welcome farm visits from our current and potential customers!
The goat breed and hog breed that we raise are of particular interest, because not only are they heritage breeds they are recognized on the Slow Food Ark of Taste, making the products made from them that much more special and artisinal. All of our production is processed at a small scale ethnically-German/Texan processing plant in Muenster, TX. Fischer's Meat Market is USDA inspected and allowed for retail sales throughout the country since the passage of the 2008 Farm Bill.
We want to thank you for your time and consideration. Please take a look at our website at http://homepage.mac.com/nbmelson for further information and pictures of our farm. We also want to thank you in advance for giving local, sustainable, natural, artisinal food and the farmers who produce it a chance.
