Our
2005 Foggy Bridge Classic Pinot Noir represents Santa Maria Pinot at
its best. The color is rich and dark, reflecting the excellent ripening
conditions of that year’s harvest. The nose is quite complex displaying
aromas of bright strawberry and cherry with slight forest floor
characteristics. Its fleshy blackberry and strawberry flavors are well
integrated with French oak aging to create a rich, full bodied wine of
excellent structure and depth.
2005 was an excellent year for Pinot Noir throughout California and
Santa Maria was no exception. The season started with a cool wet spring
which gave the vines a very healthy start. Vintage conditions mostly
remained cool throughout the growing season, giving the fruit plenty of
hang time and allowing the winemakers to pick at optimum ripeness. An
original Spanish land grant from the 1830s, the Bien Nacido Vineyard
(which translates as 'well born') has become one of the most well-known
vineyards in California's Central Coast. Planted primarily to Pinot
Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Merlot, it is the source for some of
California's most distinguished wines. It is classified as a
maritime-influenced desert, with morning fog cover and afternoon
breezes from the nearby Pacific Ocean. The soils consist of sand, chalk
and marine loam that provide good drainage, and the climate provides
even temperatures with very little rainfall. For more information about
the origin of this vineyard, visit our blog.
