2005 Syrah "Roasted Slope Vineyard" -- Andrew Murray Vineyards Shopping Cart
90 Points by Stephen Tanzer and Robert Parker!
This is the tenth release of this Syrah from a singular, 14 year old Syrah vineyard which has 5% Viognier interplanted amongst the Syrah vines. Thus the wine is a blend of Syrah and Viognier that were picked and fermented together. It is a very shy bearer of fruit... the average yield over the last few years has been right about 1 ton per acre. This is about 2.75 pounds per plant or about 12 clusters per vine. Other wineries brag about low yield at 3 tons per acre... well this is truly low yield, concentrated wine. The 2005 Syrah Roasted Slope is dark and brooding in color, with complex aromas of black cherry, spices, and white pepper, toasty oak and candied violets (from the Viognier). This could be the last of its kind so be sure to get some before it is all gone. "Roasted Slope" is the direct translation of "Cote Rotie", one of the most famous vineyards in all of France, where Syrah and Viognier are allowed/encouraged to grow together in the same vineyards.
We craft our wine with the same winemaking regime that the French use to craft their wines. The co-fermentation of the Viognier with the Syrah yields a wine that is slightly softer and smoother for its young age, with the wonderful perfumed highlights of Viognier in the nose. The Viognier also brings out the elusive candied-violets aroma in Syrah.
This is a very rich and full-bodied Syrah that is fun to drink right now; however do not be fooled, this wine will age for years to come.
P.S. If you are one who cares, Robert Parker Jr. has consistently rated this wine at 90 points or higher since its first release!

1997 Andrew Murray Vineyards Syrah Roasted Slope Vineyard
Rating: 92 points
Drink: Through 2011
Source: Wine Advocate #124 (Aug 1999)
The saturated black/purple-colored 1997 Syrah Roasted Slope Vineyard is a field blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier, both harvested and fermented together. It reveals jammy, syrupy, black raspberry and cherry flavors combined with a floral note and a touch of honey. Full-bodied, expansively-textured, and pure, with less aggressive tannin than in Les Coteaux, this sweet (from ripe fruit, not sugar), rich, long wine should drink well for 10-12 years.
At a time when many California wines seem to be priced proportionally to their producers' egos, Andrew Murray's offerings are a breath of fresh air given their exceptionally high quality and realistic prices - readers take note.
1999 Andrew Murray Vineyards Syrah Roasted Slope Vineyard
Rating: 92 points
Drink: 2002-2012
Source: Wine Advocate #139 (Feb 2002)
The exceptional 1999 Syrah Roasted Slope (95% Syrah and 5% Viognier) is a top achievement in such a cool year. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by a complex nose of honeysuckle, blackberries, and licorice. Full-bodied, rich, fleshy, well-balanced, and pure, it is a super effort for the vintage. Drink it over the next decade. P.S. Readers who visit Los Olivos will find the winery has a tasting room in the quaint village center.
2000 Andrew Murray Vineyards Syrah Roasted Slope Vineyard
Rating: 90 points
Drink: 2005-2013
Source: Wine Advocate #148 (Aug 2003)
The most backward offering in this portfolio is the 2000 Syrah Roasted Slope Vineyard. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by restrained aromas of blackberries, currants, and sweet spice. This Syrah should develop well, but at present it needs another 1-2 years of bottle age. Given its depth and length, it may turn out to be better than the Hillside Reserve. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2013.
