C-Plex™ Powder, provided by Douglas Laboratories,
contains pure, hypoallergenic vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) as buffered mineral
ascorbates of calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, manganese and chromium.
Selenium and citrus bioflavonoid complex are also included. The nutrients are
provided in a pleasant-tasting, orange flavored base, naturally sweetened with
fructose. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has numerous
biological functions. Foremost, it is essential for the synthesis of collagen
and glycosaminoglycans which are the building materials of all connective
tissues, such as skin, blood vessels, tendons, joint cartilage and bone. Vitamin
C is the required coenzyme for two groups of enzymes that catalyze the
cross-linking of collagen fibers – lysyl hydroxylases and prolyl hydroxylases.
As such, vitamin C is essential for normal wound healing and capillary health. Vitamin C participates in the biosynthesis of
carnitine, serotonin, and certain neurotransmitters, including norepinephrine. Vitamin C is among the most powerful antioxidants
in humans and animals. Free radicals are unstable chemicals formed in the body
during metabolism and from exposure to environmental sources, such as pollution
and cigarette smoke. Free radicals are necessary for energy metabolism and
immune function, but when an excessive number of free radicals are formed, they
can attack healthy cells, especially their membrane lipids and proteins. This,
in turn, is thought to contribute to a number of degenerative diseases. Vitamin C is a water-soluble, chain-breaking
antioxidant that reacts directly with superoxide, hydroxyl radicals, and singlet
oxygen. Laboratory studies show that vitamin C completely protects lipids in
plasma and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) against atherogenic peroxidative
damage. In addition, vitamin C interacts with glutathione and alpha-lipoic acid,
and regenerates vitamin E. The antioxidant functions of vitamin C have clinical
significance in providing protection from free radical damage to the eyes,
lungs, blood and the immune system. Vitamin C in the form of free ascorbic acid can
sometimes lead to stomach upset in people who are sensitive to acidic foods. C-Plex
Powder™ contains buffered mineral ascorbates to help minimize stomach irritation
that can result from free ascorbic acid ingestion. C-Plex™ Powder also provides
a number of minerals and trace elements that are often low in today’s diets. Bioflavonoids (also called flavonoids) are
a class of phytochemicals that are potent antioxidants which scavenge many
potentially damaging free radicals. An important aspect of the antioxidant
properties of bioflavonoids is their synergy with vitamin C. The bitter tasting
flavanones, hesperidin and naringin, from the white albedo layer of citrus
peels, have been shown to extend the nutritional functions of vitamin C. Bioflavonoids are also capable of binding to metal
ions, which prevents these metals from acting as catalysts in the body to
enhance free radical production. Many bioflavonoids support the health of the
body’s circulatory system by helping maintain capillary blood flow and proper
vascular permeability, integrity, and resiliency. Bioflavonoids are also involved in a wide array of
other biochemical functions, such as immune function, platelet aggregation,
enzyme activity, and the metabolism of collagen, cholesterol, and histamine. C-Plex
Powder provides 250 mg of citrus bioflavonoid complex per serving. Selenium is a nutritionally essential trace
element for humans and animals. Selenium is a cofactor for about 10
selenoproteins in the body, and the most important of these appears to be
glutathione peroxidase (GPX). GPX uses glutathione to reduce hydrogen peroxide
and thus helps protect cells and plasma against free radical injury. GPX
activity depends on an adequate supply of dietary selenium. In the body,
inorganic selenium has been shown to complex with heavy metals, such as mercury,
cadmium and silver. C-Plex Powder provides 20 mcg of selenium as bioavailable
selenium methionate per serving. C-Plex Powder may be a useful dietary supplement
for those who wish to increase their daily intake of vitamin C and synergistic
bioflavonoids. One-half to one tablespoon, two times daily, or as
directed by physician. Stir briskly in 6 or more ounces of water or other
suitable beverage, and drink immediately. When supplementing at higher levels,
individual 1 tablespoon servings may be taken at least 2 hours apart to help
maximize absorption. No adverse effects have been reported. Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct
light. Keep out of reach of children. Ballmer PE, Reinhart WH, Jordan P, Bühler E, Moser UK, Gey
