Mastruço: a member of the cruciferous plant family, mastruço is rich in vitamin A, the B-complex of vitamins, vitamin C, phosphorus, iron, iodine and sulphur. It is beneficially employed in Brazil with rheumatism and arthritis, its immune modulating effects, its phytosterols which regulate interleukins (soluble factors which stimulate growth-related activities of leukocytes as well as other cell types. They enhance cell proliferation and differentiation, DNA synthesis, secretion of other biologically active molecules and responses to immune and inflammatory stimuli.), and its ability in helping to maintain glucosamine levels in the joints and thus helping to keep them lubricated. In popular use, it is known to have beneficial effects on the regulation of uric acid levels, tuberculosis, rickets, kidney stones and diminishing the toxic effect of tobacco consumption. Mastruço is used as a digestive aid, a diuretic and is thought to benefit the functioning of the liver. It is used as a purgative agent to expel catarrah and is utilized to combat bronchitis and chronic coughs. It is often employed with kidney stones, tuberculosis, rickets, cystitis and to reduce uric acid levels.. Pata de vaca: Literally, "cow's foot," pata de vaca has been described as hypoglycemic, a blood purifier and a diuretic, and has been used for over 60 years to balance blood sugar levels in diabetics. It is considered a good blood cleanser, and a leaf decoction is used internally and externally for elephantiasis and snakebite, as well as other skin problems (including those of a syphilitic nature). It is a highly regarded treatment for diabetes, even being called "vegetable insulin." As such, it is used in South America to help balance blood sugar levels and to alleviate other symptoms of diabetes (such as polyuria, kidney disorders, and other urinary problems). Its primary uses in Brazil are for diabetes, as a diuretic for kidney and urinary disorders (including polyuria, cystitis and kidney stones), as a blood cleanser and to build blood cells, for high cholesterol and to fight free radicals.. Jambolão: belonging to Myrtaceae family jambolão is one of the most commonly medicinal plants used to treat diabetes mellitus in Brazil. It is used to strengthen the teeth and gums, to treat leucorrhoea, stomachalgia, fever, gastropathy, strangury, dermopathy, constipation, and to inhibit blood discharges in the feces. The folkloric use of this species to treat infectious diseases stimulated an investigation in June 2007, published in the Brazilian Journal of Microbiology (Braz. J. Microbiol. vol.38 no.2 São Paulo Apr./June 2007), of the antimicrobial activity of the hydroalcoholic extract against standard and multi–drug resistant Gram–positive and Gram negative human pathogenic bacteria, as well as against yeasts. Two yeasts (Candida albicans and Candida krusei) and seven bacteria (including E-coli and Staphylococcus aureus) and three multi–resistant bacterial strains (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus, resistant to commonly used antimicrobials, as well as sensible to Aztreonam, polymyxin B and vancomycin, respectively) were used to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of jambolão. The results were: "our current findings show a remarkable activity against Gram–negative bacteria and yeasts, including multi–resistant Gram–negative strains." <h5 ALIGN="LEFT">Contraindications</h5> None published; however, due to its hypoglycemic effects, BronchiFlex should be used with care for anyone taking diabetic medications, as it may potentiate their effects. As there are no studies confirming the safety of these decoctions used by pregnant women (nor is there indication in traditional medicine systems using this plant during pregnancy), it is not recommended to use during pregnancy.
