CARIGNANE
2006 PRIVATE RESERVE
SANTA CLARA VALLEY
GUGLIELMO WINE GROUP SELECTION
This special release, bottled especially for our GWG members, was produced from a small block of old vine Carignane grapes planted on our estate back in the 1940’s. Our winemakers added Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) and Petite Sirah (2%) to open the wine to a deeper more complex level of expression. Carignane is thought to have originated in northern Spain and grows well in a Mediterranean climate. As a result, it is widely grown in many of the countries that border the Mediterranean Sea including France, Italy, Spain, and Algeria. Carignane is the most widely planted grape in France. It has also found a home in almost every other wine producing country around the world.
Traditionally our Carignane has been blended into our various red wines. However we felt the 2006 vintage exhibited enough interest on its own to merit a special limited bottling for our Guglielmo Wine Group members. On the nose the wine displays an array of black cherry, cassis, anise and light coffee aromas. On the palate its lighter style and crisp acidity make it perfect for a variety of foods including, chicken, salmon, or beef—much like you would serve a Pinot Noir. This wine would also be at home served with fresh pasta with tomato sauce with basil or a great pizza. This very limited release yielded only 250 cases.
