Given the century long success of Zinfandel in Amador County, I jumped on the opportunity to vintify the grapes from a tiny two acre vineyard Tom Dillian planted just over a decade ago. While the flavors of the resulting Primitivo wines are quite similar to Zinfandel, the Primitivo is true to its name and, without fail, has ripened ahead of our Zinfandel each and every vintage, sometimes by as much as two weeks.
The 2007 Primitivo has a beautiful purple color with a carmine edge due to the elevated pH and the ripeness of the grapes in 2007. The aromas are of raspberries, plums and dense jamy blackberries. A bouquet of vanilla and hazelnut add to the wine’s complexity. On the palate, zesty flavors of bright red fruits mingle with those of mocha and oak. The fruit flavors transition to a long lingering finish, featuring tannins that are soft and well integrated. Be careful of this wine. The young fruit flavors belie the 15.0% alcohol, which is pushing the envelope for a Runquist wine.
