Carignane is a variety that hails from the Aragon region in Spain, but is better known in France where it was the most widely planted red varietal until 2000. In California during the years immediately following prohibition Carignane became renown as a workhorse producing large quantities of wine that were incorporated into red table wine blends. At one time Carignane was the third most widely planted grape in the state.
We share the production of the River Oaks Ranch with a number of other vintners so our production is limited. In 2007 we crushed just one and three quarters tons from this seventy year old vineyard overlooking the Mokelumne River.
Like the inaugural vintage the 2007 Carignane has a terrific color with a depth and intensity that approaches that of Petite Sirah. The 2007 Carignane’s aromas of warm dark-berry pie filling combining notes of Blue, Logan and Boysenberry are also reminiscent of Petite Sirah. The Carignane however carries a note of terrior and has a tarry earthen note that is lacking in the Petite Sirah. Aging in small barrels provide nuances of mocha, toffee and smoke to the bouquet. On the pallet succulent dark ripe fruit flavors flow into a big fully textured wine. The Carignane carries a bit more extract than my other offerings, but the tannins are integrated and not overly aggressive. Despite the time spent in small barrels, the finish has a chalky mineral character rather than a woody oakiness.
