The “R” Petite Sirah from the Enver Salman Vineyard is my most decorated wine. The 2006 vintage just won Best of Class and Best of Region honors at the California State Fair for the fourth time in the past five years. There is a real synergy between this Clarksburg Vineyard and the
production techniques we employ that creates a wine with an intensity and richness that is unmatched. Furthermore, these characters are delivered with a supple smooth texture that is so rare in a fully flavored Petite Sirah.
As is typical of Petite Sirah, it could easily be used in a fountain pen; the color is inky purpleblack. The aromas of this year’s wine are of cassis and dense ripe concentrated black fruits. The bouquet features dark chocolate along with the jammy fruit. Flavors of smoky boysenberry and blackberries are balanced by creamy French oak. The texture is full of well-rounded tannins and should add to the wine’s complexity given some bottle age. The finish is long and lingers for minutes after swallowing the wine. It is not often that you get two wines for the price of one. Let the 2007 Petite Sirah sit in the glass and you will be rewarded with a brightening of the fruit component and a development of the oak’s bouquet and mocha scents.
