I came to know and appreciate Syrah grown in Paso Robles while I was the winemaker at J. Lohr from 1990 to 1996. In my early days of working with Syrah I was drawn to the big, concentrated, bold style of Syrah from the McLaren Vale of Australia. It was a delight to discover that the Syrah grown on the Estrella River Plain can produce a wine that is strikingly similar to those of the McLaren Vale. So despite the opportunity to make Syrah from other appellations, I choose to return to Paso Robles for this variety.
Syrah is one of only two wines that I produce that is not from a single estate. The 2006 wine is a blend from the Goodwin, Westigard and Carter vineyards North East of the town of Paso Robles.
The 2006 vintage has the typical deep purple color with a bit of ruby in the hues. The aromas are of cassis, boysenberry, and other ripe red/black fruits. The bouquet delivers notes of hazelnut with a smoky edge. On the palate thick rich flavors of sweet blackberry and fully ripened plums mingle with a bit of mocha and chocolate. The texture is round and soft and the tannins are well integrated and provide a smooth supple texture. The lengthy finish is loaded with ripe fruit and smoky toasted oak.
