Syrah, or Shiraz as the Australians call this variety, is particularly well suited to the Paso Robles appellation in California’s Central Coast. The thin soils, warm climate and cool harvest nights of the Estrella River Plain help tame the vigorous nature of this grape variety and the resulting wine shows good depth and concentration. I have especially enjoyed the rich, bold style of Syrah from the McLaren Vale of Australia, and it is that style of wine that the “R” Syrah attempts to emulate.
The 2007 vintage has the typical deep purple color accompanied by youthful almost florescent hues. The aromas are dominated by ripe dark fruits featuring flinty olla berry, bright boysenberry and plum. The bouquet delivers the signature Runquist cellar character of hazelnut and vanilla with a uniquely smoky edge. On the palate flavors of zesty blackberry and fully ripened plums mingle with a bit of mocha and chocolate. The texture is thick and rich yet soft as the tannins are well tamed. The lengthy finish is loaded with ripe fruit and smoky toasted oak.
