From the library. The Valley View Vineyard, home of the Lucas family, was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1970’s. This propitious location has survived to the present day and now flourishes under the watchful eye of master wine grape grower Louis Lucas because it is the right location for this greatest of red grapes. The nearby Santa Ynez river provides a uniquely beneficial climate for superior wines. Cool, often foggy nights and early mornings are followed by warm, sunny days. There is a wide spread between twenty-four hour highs and lows permitting slow, even ripening, deep color, rich flavor and aroma and balanced tannins and acids.
Louis Lucas and winemaker Daniel Gehrs noticed a subtle but definite difference in this vintage between the maturity of grapes growing on the south side of the vines, facing the sun, and those growing on the opposite northern side. Additionally, a narrow sliver of the Cabernet vineyard resides on a sharp southern slope, which further accentuated the effect of the sun on the ripening grapes. A decision was made to selectively harvest these “sunny slope” grapes and vinify them as a separate, exclusive lot. Only twelve such barrels were produced in this vintage. Fifty percent were aged in new French oak barrels and the entire aging program extended out to twenty-four months of barrel aging. This allowed the wine to mature in the classic tradition, slowly and deliberately to achieve the full measure of quality demanded for our finest Cabernet.
This wine is dark and rich with black currant, cassis, leather and spice complexity and a luxurious satiny finish. It will age for a decade or more in the bottle.
