PHILOSOPHY
Lynmar Estate celebrates the distinctive terroir of the vineyards we farm by creating wines that are elegant, complex, balanced, and age worthy. Acting as stewards of the land, the winemaking team takes great care to craft wines that truly represent the dynamic, cool-climate soils from the vineyards where the grapes are grown. A genuine mosaic of the land, the people, the food and the synergy of place at Lynmar Estate are revealed in each vintage. Among our Chardonnay releases, the Quail Hill Vineyard perhaps best represents our stylistic interpretation of classic Russian River Valley Chardonnay, offering exceptional balance and elegance.
2007 GROWING SEASON
By almost any measure the 2007 vintage was absolutely fantastic, particularly in lots from the coolest sites. The growing season was nearly perfect, with a relatively cool, mild summer and minimal late-season heat spikes. Though a few mid-harvest rain showers caused some concerns and accelerated picking in our latest ripening sites, these locations ultimately yielded many outstanding lots. The defining quality of 2007 is that rare combination of intensity and balance. With exceptionally small berry size across most locations, Chardonnay yielded wines of uncommon concentration and structure. This is a vintage where you will see many wines with both power and finesse.
THE VINEYARD: QUAIL HILL VINEYARD
Originally planted in 1971, our 47-acre estate Quail Hill Vineyard has long been recognized as a gem in the region. With its location, soil composition, long, cool growing season and dramatic elevation changes, this site offers superb conditions for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. 71% of the vineyard has been replanted to better match each sub block to available clonal selection and rootstocks. Today, 70% of the vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir; 30% to Chardonnay.
WINEMAKING
All fruit was hand-harvested at night or in the cool early morning hours and quickly brought over to the winery, where grapes were carefully hand-sorted before a gentle whole-cluster pressing. Juice was lightly settled before transfer to a combination of new (45%) and used 60-gallon French oak barrels. Primary fermentations with mostly native yeasts lasted 8 weeks to 6 months, with subsequent malolactic fermentations (“ML”) lasting any where from 12 weeks to 8 months. The lees were stirred weekly through ML, adding richness and body to the wine. This vintage saw 100% ML, but retains an excellent acidity. Barrels were selected from coopers Louis Latour, François Frères, Seguin-Moreau and Remond. After 15 months of aging on the original lees, select barrels were racked into stainless steel tanks for further settling before bottling.
TASTING NOTES
A lovely pale yellow gold hue introduces a focused nose with intense notes of lemon meringue and lemon curd joined by bright green apple and subtle floral tones. The palate offers classic citrus and fresh apple with an appealing kiss of toast on the mid to late palate. The uncommon richness and weight of this vintage is beautifully balanced by a cleansing acidity on a lingering finish of excellent length. This wine is enjoyable now, but will reward further cellaring for at least 5-7 years (through 2016).
