PHILOSOPHY
Lynmar Estate respects its distinctive terroir creating wines that are elegant, complex, balanced, and age worthy. Acting as stewards of the land, the winemaking team takes great care to craft wines that truly represent the dynamic, cool-climate soils from the vineyards where the grapes are grown. A genuine mosaic of the land, the people, the food and the synergy of place at Lynmar Estate is revealed in each vintage. Five Sisters is a tribute to the sibling bond of Lynn Fritz’s five daughters. This blend of the finest five barrels from Lynmar’s Estate and top partner growers mirrors the synergy and complexity of the special relationships that exist among these special sisters.
2005 GROWING SEASON
2005 was one of the coolest and latest seasons in recent memory, which meant an excellent vintage for the more elegant, crisp and balanced style that Lynmar is known for. The skill of our vineyard team combined with a bit of luck to help us avoid losses during early rains that decimated neighboring vineyards during flowering. Grapes ripened gradually and evenly through the rest of the season, without late season heat spikes that have challenged North Coast winemakers recently. Night and early morning harvesting, with multiple passes where needed, helped us bring in fruit of exceptional quality with uncommonly high natural acidity, ripe tannins and great flavor maturity.
VINEYARDS & WINEMAKING
All fruit was hand-harvested early in the morning, transported to the winery while still cool, then hand-sorted before being gently de-stemmed and transferred without pumping into small (2.5 - 4.5 ton) open-top fermenters. For the Five Sisters lots, 10-30% whole clusters were kept in select fermentations, where stem ripeness warranted, to moderate extraction and add complexity. Fruit was then cold-soaked 5-10 days at 50°F before allowing native yeast fermentations to begin. Fermentations were gently punched down by hand 2-4 times per day. Total skin contact ranged from 14-18 days depending upon each lot objective. Wines were then barreled where secondary, malolactic fermentation occurred over the next several months. As usual, racking was minimal or not at all, with aging on light, or full, lees until the final blend was assembled. The blend this year came from five vineyard sources: Hawk Hill (Bodega Highway corridor, 115 & Pommard clones), Jack Hill (Freestone area, 115 clone), Ferguson (Freestone area, mixed Dijon clones), Terra de Promissio (Petaluma Gap, 115 & 777 clones), and Quail Hill (old vine Swan field selection). Paul and Vicky Michalczyk’s Hawk Hill Vineyard was the dominant component this year and primarily responsible for this vintage’s vibrant fruit focus. Quail Hill Vineyard and Terra de Promissio were next in line and contributed strongly in terms of aromatics and structure, respectively. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
TASTING NOTES
This wine truly exemplifies the character and quality of the 2005 vintage. While true to type in the classically elegant Lynmar style, there is an immediate sense of depth and concentration here. The color and robe are quintessentially Pinot Noir with youthful garnet and violet tones, and a bright, varietally proper translucence (you actually should be able to see through a Pinot Noir!) In the nose bold, yet clean, fruit-driven aromas of cherry cola, black raspberry, and ripe strawberry are front and center. The fruit this year is accented by an uncommon spiciness with notes of coriander, clove, and gunflint all coming to mind, and adding nuance and interest. While there is a sense of ripeness with this vintage it comes with a wonderful sense of proportion. The palate is viscous and rich, yet light on its feet due to ultra-fine tannins and an exceptionally balanced acidity. A long, lingering finish bodes well for extended cellaring (7-8+ years), though this wine will be enjoyable upon release especially if decanted and enjoyed with a fine meal. Enjoy!
