Philosophy
Lynmar Estate celebrates the distinctive terroir of the exceptional Russian River Valley vineyards we farm. Our winemaking team strives to capture these dynamic, cool-climate sites, creating wines that are elegant, complex, balanced, and age worthy.
2007 Growing Season
By almost any measure the 2007 vintage was absolutely fantastic, particularly in lots from the coolest sites. The growing season was nearly perfect, with a relatively cool, mild summer and minimal late-season heat spikes. Though a few mid-harvest rain showers caused some concerns and accelerated picking in our latest ripening sites, these locations ultimately yielded many outstanding lots. The defining quality of 2007 is that rare combination of intensity and balance. With exceptionally small berry size across most locations, Chardonnay yielded wines of uncommon concentration and structure. This is a vintage where you will see many wines with both power and finesse.
The Vineyard: Zephyr Farms
The Zephyr Farms vineyard is on the western border of the Green Valley / Sonoma Coast appellation, and of the vineyards we source, is the closest to the Pacific Ocean. Growers Steve Whiteman and Bob Traux planted a small patch of Chardonnay next to their 3 Pinot Noir blocks, which yields the grapes for this wine. Yields vary widely at this site, where the harsh coastal climate stresses the vines into intensifying concentration via very small berry size and, consequently, strikingly low yields. Lynmar Estate is the sole recipient of this fruit, which tends to give us a wine of bold, complex flavors and rich, unctuous texture while all the while staying “light on its feet” from exceptional cool-climate acidity.
Winemaking
All fruit was hand-harvested in the cool early morning hours and transported to the winery while still cool. Grapes were carefully hand-sorted before a gentle whole-cluster pressing. Juice was lightly settled before transfer to a combination of new (50%) and used 60-gallon French oak barrels. Slow primary fermentations with native yeasts lasted 8 months. Malolactic fermentations (“ML”) actually finished first, after about 6 months. The lees were stirred weekly through ML, contributing textural richness and body to the wine. This vintage saw 100% ML, but retains an excellent acidity. Barrel coopers were François Frères and Remond, both 3-year air dried wood with a medium toast. After 16 months in barrel on the original lees, the finished wine was gently racked into stainless steel tanks for further settling before bottling unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Notes
A beautiful concentrated golden yellow hue introduces this generous wine. Fresh tropical aromas blend with vanilla, brioche and toasted nuts with evocative notes of warm baking spices in the background. The intensity of this vintage shines through on the focused palate, where fresh citrus zest and smooth “orange creamsicle” flavors are joined by subtly complex woodsy/earthy elements. Fairly brooding and dense, the wine is kept from being overly weighty by a palate-cleansing acidity. This classically styled California Chardonnay is quite approachable now, but we expect proper bottle aging to allow for further integration between acidity and fruit concentration. Cellar for an additional 1 to 2 years (through 2010-2011).
