Philosophy
Lynmar Estate celebrates the distinctive terroir of the exceptional Russian River Valley vineyards we farm. Our winemaking team strives to capture these dynamic, cool-climate sites, creating wines that are elegant, complex, balanced, and age worthy.
2007 Growing Season
By almost any measure the 2007 vintage was absolutely fantastic, particularly in the coolest areas of Russian River Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Pinot Noir is generating much of the hype, and deservedly so given the amazing quality that has developed thus far. The growing season was nearly perfect, with a relatively cool, mild summer and minimal late-season heat spikes. Though a few mid-harvest rain showers caused some concerns and accelerated picking in our latest ripening sites, these locations ultimately yielded many outstanding lots. The defining quality of the 2007 wines is that rare combination of intensity and balance. Pinot Noir provided small berries and enjoyed extended hang time, together yielding wines of uncommon concentration and structure. Many 2007 wines show both power and finesse; we expect excellent aging potential from this vintage.
The Vineyard: Zephyr Farms
The Zephyr Farms vineyard is on the western border of the Green Valley/Sonoma Coast appellation, and of the vineyards we source, is the closest to the Pacific Ocean. Growers Steve Whiteman and Bob Traux planted nine acres of Dijon clones on Goldridge soils. Yields vary widely at this site, where the harsh coastal climate stresses the vines and intensifies both the color and flavors of the Pinot Noir fruit. Lynmar Estate is the sole recipient of this fruit, which tends toward dark, bold flavors with a distinct exotic spice and classic cool-climate tannin structure.
Winemaking
Fruit was hand-harvested early in the morning and transported to the winery while cool to be hand-sorted then gently de-stemmed and transferred without pumping into small (2.5–4 ton), open-top fermenters. Fruit was cold-soaked 7-10 days at 50°F before allowing native yeast fermentations to begin. Fermentations were gently punched down 2-4 times per day as needed. Total skin contact time ranged from 14-18 days depending upon the desired extraction for each lot. After basket pressing, the new wines were gently barreled down where malolactic fermentation occurred over the next several months. Primary barrel coopers were Remond and François Frères, complemented by Louis Latour, Seguin Moreau and Rousseau. Racking was minimal or not at all, with aging on light to full lees until the final blend was assembled. The final blend is a mix of Dijon clones: 50% 667, 25% 777 and 25% 115.
Tasting Notes
Typical of the vintage, this release is notably dense and hugely aromatic, giving exotic aromas of dark fruits and East Indian spices such as cardamom and curry. The structure and fruit tones clearly express the coastal location, with dense flavors of red and black berry fruit punctuated by herbal elements in the back palate. Noticeable coastal forest floor and earthy mushroom elements meld beautifully with youthful, grainy tannins. The balance between fruit, acid and oak is ideal, giving a wine that is both powerful and elegant. This wine is approachable now, but tannins and acids will continue to integrate with further time in bottle; age for an additional 3-5 years for a rounder, more complex expression of this wine (through 2012-2014).
