2007 GROWING SEASON
By almost any measure the 2007 vintage looks absolutely fantastic, particularly in the coolest areas of Russian River Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Pinot Noir is generating much of the hype, and deservedly so given the amazing quality that has developed thus far. The growing season was nearly perfect, with a relatively cool, mild summer and minimal late-season heat spikes. Though a few mid-harvest rain showers caused some concerns and accelerated picking in our latest ripening sites, these locations ultimately yielded many outstanding lots. The defining quality of the 2007 wines will be that rare combination of intensity and balance. Pinot Noir provided small berries and enjoyed extended hang time, together yielding wines of uncommon concentration and structure. Many 2007 wines show both power and finesse; we expect excellent aging potential from this vintage.
THE VINEYARD: QUAIL HILL VINEYARD
Originally planted in 1971, our 47-acre estate Quail Hill Vineyard has long been recognized as a gem in the region. With its location, soil composition, long, cool growing season and dramatic elevation changes, this site offers superb conditions for Pinot Noir. 71% of the vineyard has been replanted to better match each sub block to available clonal selection and rootstocks. Today, 70% of the vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir; 30% to Chardonnay.
WINEMAKING
Fruit was hand-harvested early in the morning and quickly taken to the winery to be hand-sorted then gently de-stemmed and transferred without pumping into small (2.5–4 ton) open-top fermenters. Fruit was cold-soaked 7-10 days at 50°F before allowing native yeast fermentations to begin. Fermentations were gently punched down 2-4 times per day as needed. Total skin contact time ranged from 14-18 days depending upon the desired extraction for each lot. After basket pressing, the new wines were gently barreled down where malolactic fermentation occurred over the next several months. Primary coopers were Remond and François Frères, complemented by Louis Latour, Seguin Moreau and Rousseau. Racking was minimal or not at all, with aging on light to full lees until the final blend was assembled. The primary clonal selection for this blend came from Block 2 (47% - 35-year old Swan selection) and Block 6 (25% - a mix of Dijon and Pommard clones). The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
TASTING NOTES
This vintage offers an uncommonly intense expression of our estate vineyard, with a noticeably seamless quality from entry to finish. The unusually dense garnet-tinged hue hints at the weighty, velvety qualities of the vintage. Aromas and flavors center on a deep core of red fruit – cherry, red currant, raspberry and pomegranate – with lovely subtle notes of baking spice, floral tones and Darjeeling tea. Setting our house style and vision of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, this wine is both powerful and delicately balanced, yielding an exceptionally long, flavorful finish. Enjoyable upon release, we expect this wine to age beautifully for 7-10 years (through 2014-2017).
