Madroña's Cabernet Sauvignon is a striking example of what a high-mountain vineyard can produce. The grapes are very small-berried resulting in a wine of deep color, intense fruit, and full-bodied texture. Traditionally blended with Cabernet Franc for aromatic complexity and Merlot for tannin structure, we age this wine in the finest French and American oak. Our customers constantly search out older vintages of our Cabernet Sauvignon as it is known to age quite gracefully.
The 2003 Vintage
There’s something good about great Cab. It’s not showy. It’s not audacious. It’s not pretending to be something it’s not. Cabernet Sauvignon instead is the confident blend of herbiness and fruit, with structure to boot.
So when I started tasting the ’03 Madroña Cabernet Sauvignon with over a year of bottle age, I wasn’t surprised by its straightforward honesty. Complex in both the nose and the palate, this vintage is destined for great food pairings.
Herbed green olives, fresh oregano and anise fill the aromas while deeper characters of cranberry, plum and cherry cola set the base of nose. Add to this a hint of toasty oak and sweet vanilla, and almost any bridge ingredient is covered.
The palate is equally intriguing yet refined and elegant (not something found nowadays in California Cabs). Incredible balance from start to finish, cherry, dark chocolate and raspberry fruit greet the senses. Notes of black currant unite the characters, flowing seamlessly into a lingering cherry finish. And with a framework of young tannins to support the suave structure, this Cabernet is also destined to improve with time. p>
I drink this wine with almost anything—tomato soup, Rib-eye steaks, blue cheese on fresh baguettes, grilled ham and cheese, and this was all in the last week. But a good cut of beef with a blue cheese/rosemary reduction sauce, is just what this proud wine deserves.
