2007 Grenache
Grenache
Grenache is quite possibly the fruitiest red wine out there. Originating in the Rhone region of France, the variety is grown in many countries, often as fresh and light varietal for quaffing. For Madroña, we had never intended to bottle a Grenache. We had grafted in the variety to blend with our Syrah to intensify its fruitiness. Unfortunately, the fresh strawberry characters overflowing in the wine merely muddled the cherished gaminess and complexity of our Syrah. Thus, our one and only Grenache was born. (We now sell the grapes to other wineries.)
The Vineyards
We grafted the Chateau Rayas clone of Grenache into our Pleasant Valley vineyards in 2005. A joint venture between Paul, Maggie, David and Sheila Bush, we strive to produce the premier Grenache in California. The rootstocks are all devigorating, an important aspect to controlling the growth in this variety. Even so, we drop 50% of the crop to insure balance in the vine and uniform ripeness. And with a slight north-facing slope at the 2900 foot elevation, the growing season is long and drawn-out, perfect for the wine's great structure and complexity.
The 2007 Vintage
OK, first and foremost, forget everything you have ever thought about California Grenache and expect something totally new. Now, please note the deepness of the color of this wine, almost the antithesis of California Grenache. Next, partake in the aromas, classically Grenache at the onset with fresh strawberry fruit. But with just a bit more reflection, the undertones of dark cherry, blackberry and hints of spice start to come forth, giving a sense of the complexity of this wine. Now, sample the palate. It's soft, but in an intriguingly serious way. The fruit is fresh yet deep and dark, the mid-palate balanced and structured, and the finish of ripe plum and just a note of rhubarb let you know that this wine is destined for the table not the deck. And that's the way Grenache should be!
Suggested Food Pairings
This wine is fantastic with grilled chicken with a slight sweet sauce or paella with plenty of chorizo and shrimp. Come to think about it, this wine goes with almost anything.
