Our goal is to sculpt a wine that is both classic and contemporary--expressing the unique soils and climate of our mountain vineyards. Using a wide variety of clones, rootstocks and microclimates, we produce a wine with exceptional balance and complexity. Bright fruit intertwined with the classic Rhône “smokiness” make Madroña Syrahs an experience to behold. The 2005 Vintage The whole concept of “elegance” seems to allude many in this era of flashy trends. Whether it be the gowns worn to the Golden Globes or the dancing in the clubs at night, the more outrageous and egregious, the more memorable and enticing. And even those who aim for elegance are often met by failure, as elegance embodies more than the superficial. So does it also seem in the world of wine where the bigger, the bolder, the better. So with this in mind, I introduce to you the 2005 Reserve Syrah, the antithesis of everything for which a Californian Syrah strives. This wine from its core is truly elegant and refined. With this I do not mean the wine is light. On the contrary, the color is a deep, dark garnet, but with an intriguing brilliance. And the nose is filled with a myriad of aromas. Freshly crushed black pepper mixed with zested clove and hints of coriander create a sense of sweet mincemeat married with red currants and a medley of fresh berries. Even the ever-present notes of lamb and smoked sausages are subtly integrated into this world of intoxicating aromas. And then there’s the palate. A blast of classic Northern Rhone Syrah briefly greets the senses, intertwining completely into the sweet mountain cherry fruit and layers of pepper spice. A dash of vanilla and an essence of wild blackberry linger well on the finish. But it’s the balance that is positively exciting with an evenness that follows the structural cord throughout the entire wine. Youthful and vibrant, this Syrah is anything but boring, holding its own with the heaviest of lamb and beef dishes with just a hint of spice. In all honesty, I cannot take credit for creating this wine. I simply bottled this Syrah as is.
