Mendocino's vineyards lie at the cool northern extreme of California's coastal wine region. Nestled between Mendocino's rugged mountains and forests, these vineyards produce remarkable Pinot Noir grapes. Our 2007 SketchBook Pinot Noir boasts a marvelously complex nose of ripe black cherry and black raspberry fruit with complementary scents of sage, black tea, white pepper and vanilla. On the palate, the wine delivers more rich berry and herbal flavors that pick up a zesty tea-leaf spiciness in the long finish. This flavorful, well-balanced Pinot Noir will make a fine accompaniment to grilled salmon, roast duck, and aromatic cheeses.
At the headwaters of the Russian River and north of Napa Valley, Mendocino County is considered by many the last wine frontier. An area known for its simple way of life and breath-taking natural beauty, the grapes grown here seem to take on a bit of the free-spiritedness of the locals themselves.
