Petite Syrah is a beautiful grape to grow and a fun wine to make. We grow it on the property where Mark Neal was raised in Rutherford, the heart of Napa Valley. Over the years this property has grown walnuts and other varieties of winegrapes, but we see the Petite Syrah, as well as our Zinfandel, as a perfect fit for this part of Napa Valley. Limiting vigor in the valley soil is not a problem with the amount of alluvial rock in the soil. The result is a crop of small berry, intensely colored and flavored grapes.
Petite Syrah has been used as blending grape of ages because of the color it can contribute. On its own, the juice develops an inky, black color that stays with the finished wine. Never shy of color, aromas, flavors and tannin, we accentuate the dark black fruit character and round out the flavor and texture with a moderate amount of French oak. Intense aromas of blueberry, blackberry syrup and a light amount of toasty oak sweetness combine with the rich, dark fruit characters in the mouth. This is not a tannin monster, but has a balanced structure with nice acidity, making it a lovely and bold, food friendly wine. Tasty now and able to cellar for developing even more character and flavor.
