The growing season for 2007 was mixed with stretches of heat and cool periods, creating a wide span of harvests dates and very interesting fruit characters in the vineyard. The younger vines planted at my childhood home property in Rutherford were harvested first and the Petite Syrah on the same property came in a month later. Our sixth bottling has a bit more Petite Syrah than the 2006 vintage, giving the finished wine a lovely balance of aromas and fruit, plus great structure and color. Aged for 11 months in 45% new Hungarian oak puncheons, the result is a delightful wine with complex flavors and color.
Lovely aromas of berries with hints of spice, and a rich, sweet oak give this wine a complex character. A sweet berry pie fruit flavor, a touch of pepper and a mouth-coating richness make this our biggest Zinfandel to date. Vanilla and cherry cream flavors, dried fruit and chocolate covered cherry notes accompany a big, velvety tannin texture and long finish.
