<H1>2007 Byrd Cooper Zinfandel -- Neyers Vineyards Shopping Cart</H1> $20.00 <IMG SRC="https://store.nexternal.com/neyers/images/BCZIN.jpg" ALIGN=right ALT="2007 Byrd Cooper Zinfandel" NAME="2007 Byrd Cooper Zinfandel" BORDER=0 HSPACE=10> Byrd Cooper is the name of my maternal grandfather, a farmer who spent most of his life in the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I loved the time we spent together, and still remember with fondness when he taught me to ride a bike. We’ve used his name on our new wines since we started the business. In 2007 we made wine from a new block of Zinfandel vines owned by Rich Pato, and decided to bottle it separately, using our Byrd Cooper label. While the Pato Zinfandel we sell comes from vines that are well over 100 years old, this new wine came from a plot that was planted in the 1930's. Again we use a long maceration on the skins, followed by one year of aging in 60-gallon French oak barrels. The alcohol level for the 2007 Byrd Cooper Zinfandel is 14%, and the finished wine has about 5% Petite Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre in the blend. It was fermented completed naturally with indigenous wild yeast, and was bottled with neither fining nor filtration. The finished wine is ripe, and it’s loaded with fresh berry flavors -- charming in an almost innocent way. The low alcohol level makes it easy to down a bottle. It's not without complexity, however: at a wine event in New York last month attended by a number of French winemakers with whom I work, it was, several of them told me, the most interesting wine of the tasting.
