El Novillero is a dramatic parcel in the western-most hills of the Carneros AVA. At 500 feet elevation, it is one of the highest elevation vineyards in the appellation, and it sits in a foggy, natural amphitheater facing southeast towards the San Francisco Bay. The soil is crushed gravel and loam, mixed with granite and basalt, so yields are low, as are nutrient levels. A few months ago, Robert Parker wrote of the 2009 El Novillero: “Neyers’ 2009 Chardonnay El Novillero reminds me of some of the glory days of Louis Latour's Corton-Charlemagne. Smoky bacon fat, poached pear, honeysuckle, peach and earth all combine in a full-bodied, minerally yet authoritatively flavored Chardonnay that is part California and seemingly part French. This beauty, from a cool-climate vineyard, is just that loaded. 94 POINTS”
