Here are this quarter's twelve delicious wines: 2006 NORTH CABERNET SAUVIGNON, NAPA VALLEY This is a seductively ripe and attractively oaked Cabernet, with sweet-natured aromas of dark cherry, red plum, berry, vanilla, tobacconist-shop spice and hints of dried herbs. In the mouth, it proves palate-coating and already appealingly supple, with dark cherry, mocha, toast and vanilla the dominant flavors. The finish piles focused dark cherry, sweet plum, red currant, vanilla, toast and tobacco leaf flavors high enough to mostly obscure the wines modest tannic grip. Delicious already, it should grow even more so over the next two years. 56 cases produced. 2007 FORT ROSS WINERY PINOT NOIR, FORT ROSS VINEYARD, SONOMA COAST There is a decidedly French elegance and restraint to the nose of this lovely Pinot Noir, and a fine balance of fruit, spice and terroir elements as well. The opening aromas are a tightly-wound mix of strawberry, Kirsch, coriander seed, roasted grain and bouillon, over strong mineral undercurrents. The mineral notes make an even stronger statement on the palate, where grain, tobacco, white and pink peppercorn and black tea hints contrast with pretty fruit flavors. Those fruit flavors grow more dramatic with airing to reveal sweet and well-defined notes of strawberry, Amarena Cherry, violet and rose. The finish is long and structured, but its tannic grip seems to disappear as the wine airs. 2,700 cases produced. 2007 CALLUNA "CALLUNA VINEYARD CUVEE" PROPRIETARY RED WINE, CHALK HILL This is an elegantly styled Bordeaux-esque blend, with aromas of blackberry, dark cherry and vanilla, along with those of toffee, dried red rose, toast and minerals. It is sleek on the palate but quite forthcoming, with pretty red plum, dark cherry, vanilla, mocha and earth flavors, and hints of tobacco leaf and forest floor spice. Long and attractively gutsy at the end, this one is beautifully built for food service. 150 cases produced. 2007 SHOWKET SANGIOVESE, NAPA VALLEY This is a very successful Sangiovese, with a nose that offers scents of dark cherry and berry fruit, hints of sandalwood, pomegranate molasses, and crushed dry roses. It is attractively rich on the palate and delivers the classic fruit-oak-bright acidity combination found in fine Chianti. The finish is long, full and youthful, and the cherry, berry and sandalwood notes remain in the forefront. The balance is ideal for classic Italian dishes, while the lasting palate impression is of ripe red cherries and baking spices. Blended with 5% Cabernet Franc, 1150 cases produced. 2005 STOLPMAN SYRAH LA COPPA, SANTA YNEZ VALLEY The darkly ripe nose of this well priced Syrah poises toasted oak, forest bark, black peppercorn and tobacco leaf scents as savory counterpoints to its rich core of dark cherry and plum fruit. It proves fuller than expected on the palate, and fruiter, as dark cherry, plum, date and strawberry notes dominate. It is rich in body and lingering in flavor with the authority to match dark roasts and rich stews. A fine value, it's ready to drink. 1,000 cases produced. 2007 VICTORY VINEYARDS ZINFANDEL "PARCEL 31" CALIFORNIA This is a bright and forthcoming Zinfandel at a fine price. The aromas are a pretty mix of fresh cherry, red plum, white pepper, red rose and fresh pomegranate scents. It proves as fresh and easy-going on the palate as expected, with cherry, plum and white pepper flavors that are full of vitality and linger. This Zin will be just as delicious with roast chicken or sausage pilaf as it will with barbequed meats or pizza. 3,000 cases produced. 2007 MOLNAR FAMILY CHARDONNAY, CARNEROS Ripe, zesty, fruit packed and richly oaky, this is a flavorful Chardonnay at a fine price. The nose is a melange of pear, apple, toasted nut, vanilla custard and lemon scents. The wine delivers the promised combination of richness and zest to the palate as well, and its lemon, pear, hazelnut and sweet Panettone flavors linger nicely. Rich enough for Veal Piccata, it will be even more compatible with stuffed roast chicken. 1,942 cases produced. 2006 OJAI CLOS PEPE VINEYARD CHARDONNAY, SANTA RITA HILLS Chablis-like in almost every respect, this gorgeous Chardonnay betrays its California heritage primarily by its mid-palate generosity. The nose has distinctive preserved lemon and creamed apple notes and that deep "liquid minerals" character that is so prominent in its French counterparts. There is an almost oily richness on the palate and some chalky minerality that tames it, allowing a tightly-wound core of white peach, apple tart and preserved lemon to move forward. The finish is tightly coiled and extremely dry, with just a hint of toasted nut flavor showing up with the fruit at the end. Built for classic seafood appetizers and entrees, it will improve for a minimum of two years. 413 cases produced. 2007 ADELAIDA PAVANNE WHITE RHONE GRAPE BLEND, PASO ROBLES The aromas of this elegantly-fruited Rhone-style white are a pretty mix of melon, citrus, honeysuckle and mineral scents, with just a hint of strawberry in the background. The mineral notes are slightly more prominent on the palate, and they add a chalky hint to the wine's pretty peach, honey and preserved orange peel flavors. Those flavors linger well and the balance is lovely to the end, making this one an easy match for a wide variety of foods. 841 cases produced. 2008 PALMINA ARNEIS HONEA VINEYARD, SANTA YNEZ VALLEY Forward, rich and decidedly bright-citric, the aromas of this immediately-engaging white suggest preserved lemons, apple skins, and melons, over mineral undercurrents. The wine is both fleshy and exuberantly zesty on the palate, with mineral, lemon peel, citron, white nectarine, kiwi and melon flavors. Super long, the finish is a focused display of white peach, Fuji apple skin, preserved lemon and river stone impressions. It should be a particularly lovely companion to shellfish dishes. 620 cases produced. 2008 PEIRSON MEYER SAUVIGNON BLANC, NAPA VALLEY This outstanding bottling has seductive aromas of lemon, kiwi, bees wax, pear and fresh apple, along with hints of vanilla and Mock Orange blossoms. It is decidedly youthful on the palate, but already delicious and food-worthy. As it warms a bit, it reveals gorgeous, impressively lingering flavors of Fuji apples, Meyer lemons, bees wax and custard. Certain to get better over the next two years, it would be brilliant right now with trout almondine. 100% Sauvignon Blanc. 150 cases produced. 2008 BANYAN VIOGNIER, MADERA The aromas of this generous, slightly earthy Viognier are rich in honeysuckle, white peach and apple fruit scents, and hints of jasmine blossoms. The flavors shift more toward apricot and pear, while white pepper and honeysuckle add attractive counterpoints. The texture is rich and the finish is long and this one will be a fine companion to holiday turkey as well as a pleasure all by itself. It is a fine value. 273 cases produced.
