Santa Barbara County
A little less known than some of our other vineyard designated
syrahs, the fruit for this wine came from Verna’s Vineyard in
I usually think of vineyards planted on the flats to be inferior because they often grow with excessive vigor, however in this case the vines grow with difficultly and produce a small, quality crop—because they are planted on nutrient poor sand. Also, because the cool night air collects in the canyon bottom, the grapes from this area are later ripening, higher in acidity and amazingly intense in flavor and color. By contrast, the hillside fruit ripens earlier in the season and the wine made from it is soft and flamboyant, so the two sites compliment each other and together they made a terrific wine.
This is a big juicy, peppery, fruity syrah that is straightforwardly delicious. Drink it today or drink it in the future and you will not be disappointed.
