Vineyard Character: As our portfolio of partner growers evolves, more and more we are being drawn to warmer vineyards in colder terroirs. Though Freestone Hill is eight miles from the Pacific Ocean and in one of the coolest parts of the Sonoma Coast, it benefits from an ideal south-facing exposure on a steep hillside. This exposure allows the vines to receive ample sunlight, which in turn produces profound red fruit flavors. Of approximately 35 individual lots of Sonoma Coast fruit in the exceptional 2007 vintage, this one dramatically stood out as being worthy of a vineyard-designate bottling.
Tasting Notes: From its lifted and beautifully concentrated red fruit liqueur aromatics of cherry and raspberry to its rich, juicy mouthfeel and mouthwatering acidity, this is not a shy wine. On the palate, it offers up additional layers of penetrating red fruit with an emphasis on framboise and ripe cherry, underscored by nuanced notes of fresh-picked herbs—think fennel, anise and tarragon—as well as an enticing hint of menthol. Dense but not tannic, this Pinot offers delightful transitions before concluding with a final vibrant burst of fruit.
Winemaking: 100% Pinot Noir; Multi-yeast fermentations (wild & cultured); 100% malo-lactic fermentation in barrel; 50% new Burgundian French oak barrels; Bottled without fining or filtration
THE PATZ & HALL FAMILY OF WINEGROWERS
Steve and Joe Dutton – Freestone Hill Vineyard – Sonoma Coast
Though owned by the Cleary family, this distinctive property on the Sonoma Coast is under long-term lease to the Dutton family, who planted the vineyard in the early ‘90s and continue to farm it today. The site, which benefits from meticulous farming practices, features Dijon Clone vines (114 and 115) that yield small berries with classic Pinot Noir fruit character. We began working with fruit from this excellent vineyard in 2004.
