Vineyard Character: This site, located on Frei Road in the heart of Russian River Valley, is owned by the Martinelli family and is farmed by George Martinelli, the youngest in a distinguished family of Sonoma County viticultural masters. Our two parcels are planted to Dijon Chardonnay clones, on well-drained, low-vigor, Goldridge sandy loam soils. These iron-rich, reddish soils consistently produce fruit with great structure and acidity.
Tasting Notes: A product of the great 2007 vintage, this wine is vibrant and racy, with bright minerality and a beam of mouthwatering acidity that supports layers of concentrated peach, spicy pear, green apple and honeydew melon. Intriguing floral and spice elements are accented by pleasing layers of vanilla, clove and maple syrup from the new French oak. Though it displays a precociously intense appeal right now, it is just going to get better and better, and is likely to be the longest lived vintage we have ever produced.
Winemaking: 100% Chardonnay fruit; Whole cluster pressed; Multi-yeast fermentations (wild & cultured); Sur lie aged with weekly stirring; 100% malo-lactic fermentation in barrel; 50% new Burgundian French oak barrels; Bottled without filtering
