TASTING NOTES
This wine is deep red with garnet tints and complex aromas combining delicate blackberry and black currant with white pepper and spice. Flavors feature a marriage between soft spice (first white pepper then vanilla) and Provencal flavor; “Garrigue” (thyme and rosemary). Rounded tannins give this wine fullness and elegance.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Delicious with pan-seared pork chops and veal cutlets, also firm, salty cheeses and grilled and carmelized vegetables (e.g. red peppers, onions)
VINEYARDS
The Pierrelongue vines grow on the high rocky terrace of scrubland, the so-called Garrigues, covering the south-western slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail hills, near Gigondas and Chateuaneuf-du-Pape. The name Pierrelongue (long stone) comes from the rocky terrain with its long stones. The Vacqueyras appellation specializes in Syrah, Grenache, Mouvedre and Cinsault grape varieties. This appellation is on the right hand of Rhone river consisting of clay and limestone soils that permit a slow and regular restitution of water for the grape’s elaboration. Crops tend to have low yield with very aromatic and concentrated fruit tannins.
GRAPE VARIETIES: Black Grenache (70 %) provides forward fruit characters, Syrah (25 %) adds structure and deep color, and Cinsault (5 %) introduces delicateness.
WINEMAKING: Parcel selection is very important: old Grenache (70 years old) and younger Syrah (30-40 years old), with the best exposures and low yields. Grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously sorted. Each grape variety is vinified separately after total de-stemming. Long fermentation (3-4 weeks) is done with frequent pump-overs and daily control (analysis-tasting).
MATURATION: After fermentation, the wine is blended and aged in French oak barrels for 10 months.
