Very nice work. <IMG SRC="https://store.nexternal.com/sideways/images/06%20Chard%20SBC.jpg" WIDTH=150 ALIGN=right ALT="Sanford, 2006 Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County" NAME="Sanford, 2006 Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County" BORDER=0 HSPACE=10> The Back Story Man, this wine is like riding a time machine back to the early 80’s.  When I punch this wine into my personal way-back machine, it takes me to a certain restaurant in San Diego that served my first bottles of Sanford. I also recall the woman that enjoyed this wine with me, making this label a sort of port key to my early love life.  The distinctive wild flower label was later soaked off the empty bottle and glued into my first wine tasting book, along with my early, awkward attempts at crafting a worthy wine description. Much more recently, the Sanford winery became known for its role in the movie “Sideways”.  Remember the first tasting room scene, where Miles instructs Jack on how to taste wine, followed by the conversation they had with the long-haired tasting room manager in the cowboy hat?  That scene was shot at Sanford. The Vineyard This is not a vineyard-designated wine, as many of our wines are.  When a wine label contains the name of a vineyard, it means at least 95% of the grapes came from that vineyard.  This label tells us that the grapes came from “Santa Barbara County”, which means that at least 85% of the grapes came from a vineyard in the named AVA (American Viticultural Area).  Though not as prestigious as a vineyard-designated wine, I often find blends from multiple vineyards produce wines with an immediate appeal.  This is such a wine. And it comes from four vineyards – Sanford’s estate vineyard, La Rinconada, provides the foundation for a structure using grapes from the Bien Nacido, Sanford & Benedict and El Camino vineyards, adding complexity to this fruit-forward wine. Tasting Notes This barrel-fermented wine shows exotic tropical fruit, a characteristic of Santa Barbara Chardonnay, along with the elegant citrus and minerality contributed by the fruit from the Santa Rita Hills vineyards.
