Tasting Notes The Winery Ron and Marilyn Denner were careful about their entry into the wine business. Wanting to return to their native California from their operations in Colorado, Utah and Idaho, they spent many patient years conducting an extensive search for vineyard land. Finally, in 1997 they founded Denner Vineyards in Westside Paso Robles, an area known for its award-winning Rhone varietals. Denner Vineyards was situated on what was formerly 156 acres of rocky, rolling hills covered with barley. Three years of careful planning went into the design and layout of the 105 acre estate vineyard before planting began. In 2005 Denner Vineyards completed construction of a state-of-the-art, gravity-flow winery for the production of estate wines. The Denners' single-minded goal since day one has been to produce individualistic, expressive, premium wines that showcase the unique terroir of Paso Robles.
A blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and the delightful but obscure Counoise. Look for hints of lavender, tar / licorice / coffee and ripe blue and black berries. The nose delivers warm, ripe fruit, tar and sweet oak spices with vanilla notes I suspect will subside over the coming years. A full mouth feel with an expansive mid-palate and long, spicy finish.
Who would name a $45 bottle of wine "Ditch Digger?" Perhaps a couple who spent decades in the fruitful operation of numerous Ditch Witch equipment dealerships?
