The Vineyards
Castaldi Vineyard - A 1-acre block from this vineyard went into this blend. Owned by grape grower and wine industry veteran Carmen Castaldi, the vineyard was planted in 1998 to clones 115, 828 and 777, of which Chronicle get the 777 block only. Each vineyard contributes different elements to the the final blend - McDougal brings structure, Castaldi delivers fruit and Demeo brings mid palate richness and near-term drinkability.

Tasting Notes
A reticent nose that, once encouraged, reveals mouth-watering red fruits and sandalwood spice. The palate begins with a sweet fruit profile of ripe Bing cherries and strawberries, then develops complexity with hints of pine forest, pie spices, and tantalizing tartness that offsets the fruit, and ends with a long mouth-watering finish. A great food wine!
Chronicle Wines is led by Proprietor Mike Hengehold, who implements a "Best of breed" strategy when it comes to selecting vineyards as well as winemakers - he's tapped Winemaker Tom Lemon (of Littorai) to craft their pinot noirs, aand Dan Cederquist (DeLoach, Hook & Ladder, Crew, et al) to craft their Zinfandels. Chronicle Wines fairly defines the sort of artisan brand I seek for you - a boutique producer dedicated to small lots from top growers.
Best known for their vineyard-designated wines, this wine is rather unique for them in that it is a blend of pinot noir from three vineyards: McDougal Ranch (52%), Demeo Vineyard (36%) and Castaldi Vineyard (13%):
Aging occurred in a variety of French oak barrels. To preserve the freshness of fruit, the wine was bottled after 11 months in oak with no fining or filtration. Ted does not subscribe to the “bigger is better” school of winemaking - the resulting Pinot Noirs are elegant with length and finesse.
