Palate - Plums and black berries up front, with lighter red and blue berries on the finish. A delightful hint of licorice invades the finish, and makes this beautiful wine (a modest 13.9% alcohol, if my memory is correct) a fun wine to pair with anything off the grill. Though aged in 60% new French oak, it is less pronounced than previous Qupe syrahs, in keeping with Lindquist's new aesthetic, emphasizing flavors of the vineyard more than the cellar. This wine is 100% Syrah from Santa Maria Valley's famed Bien Nacido vineyard's Z Block. It is notable in that Winemaker Bob Lindquist pulled two barrels (50 cases) worth of lightly-colored pressed juice into barrels, fermented it there, and then added it back to the rest of the wine fermented in tank. The result is added complexity and amplified high notes - the red and blue fruits you'll taste on the finished wine. Delightful. The Winemaker Enough sycophantism. Can this nice guy make good wine??! Well, his peers thought so. Bob was the Winemaker of the year at the 2006 Hospice du Rhone event, and has probably thrown out more awards than most winemakers will ever see. Tasting Notes
Nose - Warm, fresh-turned earth and well-worn leather with a hint of cedar spice, all floating on top of a persistent blue and black berry essence.
Bob Lindquist is known as one of the nicest guys in the wine industry, which is saying something. This is an industry filled with all sorts of people, most of them wicked smart, many of them excellent cooks, and a more often than not, they're people you want to hang around with. The occasional S.O.B. is found, but easily passed over for more desirable company. And somewhere up towards the top of this stack sits Bob Lindquist.
