Tasting Notes:
Initial aromas give a hint of what's to come, showing pear, apple, citrus blossom, and fig, all resting atop an undercurrent of almond. The mouthfeel is crisp while remaining sufficiently full to avoid being quickly forgotten. Look for flavors of pear and citrus amidst the lingering finish.
About the Grape - Pinot Gris
When ripe, Pinot Gris tends to vary significantly in color, from greenish to a pink-grey to brownish. Sometimes, all these colors can be found on a single cluster. The grapes can be crisp and acidic, but the acids can fall rapidly as the grape ripens, so the resulting wine can vary from crisp to flabby.
Harvesting at the ideal ripeness level is key, and this wine is from the famed Wiley Vineyard in the westernmost region of Anderson Valley, the vineyard home of many crisp wines of great structure. Fortunately, they also get sufficient hang time to develop phenolic ripeness to complement their crispness, while the cooler temperatures allow them to avoid flabby wines.

My reaction to this wine was immediate, and I only wish I could get more than the handful of cases Doug agreed to give us. It delivers immediate pleasure, and was the favorite white wine among all of the tasting room guests during my recent tasting session with this Anderson Valley producer.
My regular readers are likely familiar with the fact that the pinot noir grape is genetically unstable. It mutates as often as Britney makes headlines, with many dozens of known clonal variations, two of which actually produce white wines - Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris (Gree) (also known as Pinot Grigio to Italians and Tokay d'Alsace when standing on Alsatian soil).
In fulfilling our mission - "Discovering your next favorite!" - we run pretty far afield to find a wine for our subscribers. The wine has to be great, of course, but the price also must fit our parameters. That's why we're so pleased when we discover a new winery making wine the way we think it should be made - in the vineyard, with minimal post-harvest manipulation. Breggo Cellars is just such a place.
