The Varietal - Gruner Veltliner
Most Gru Vees are from Austria, where a wide range of styles will be found, from simple daily wines to those intended for the ages. Gruners from the region's hilly slopes result in mineral-laden wines of deep complexity that reward many years of quiet repose in a dark cellar. Those from the valley floor are more immediately enjoyable, such as this one.
What the "Tal"?
Cheers!
Tasting Notes
Brilliantly clear in the glass, with a hint of petulance (a slight fizz). One whiff of this wine and my mouth began watering in anticipation of its crisp citrus-and-minerals flavors. Once in the mouth this wine offers a most interesting surprise - hints of melon and baked strawberries act as a counter-point to its puckery crispness, broadening its table appeal to a wide variety of light-bodied dishes. Look for the tell-tale white pepper notes that are a Gruner Veltliner signpost!
Gruner Veltliner is one of the fastest-growing varietals on the white wine aisles of any good wine shop. Why? Because Gruner, or G.V. for short (or "Gru Vee" if you're really hip!) is a versatile wine that nicely compliments a wide range of lighter dishes, including the summer's most difficult - artichokes and asparagus!
Tal is the Austrian word for "valley". The preceding syllable (Krem) refers to the river. So a wine from the Kremstal comes from the Krem River Valley, one from the Traisental, the Traisen River Valley, etc. The Malat family harvested Gruner from the Hohlgraben vineyard to produce this wine.
